Netflix again dominates the list of streaming debuts; however, they don’t have the best new releases. The ones I’m most interested in are Mrs. America and especially What We Do in the Shadows. Interestingly, both are on Hulu. More..

It’s a much slower week for digital releases, with no major first-run releases to talk about. That said, there are some previous theatrical releases that are making it to digital this week, including Promare. This movie was a monster hit for an anime release late last year, so it could be the biggest release on this week’s chart. That said, anime fans will probably want to buy it on Blu-ray. More..

With Covid-19 still running high, and the industry’s focus shifted to what people are watching at home, we’re please to announce the launch of a new chart here at The Numbers. The DEG Watched at Home Top 20 chart, produced by our friends at the Digital Entertainment Group, looks at the most popular films being watched at home each week. This includes traditional DVD and Blu-ray sales, digital sales (“EST”), and digital rentals (“tVOD”), with rankings based on the total consumer spending for a given title across those four categories. Note that it does not currently include PVOD releases, like the recent debut of Trolls: World Tour. The weekly chart will be published each Thursday for the week ending the previous Saturday.

This week, Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker led the way, as it did last week. This shouldn’t come as too much of a surprise, because even though the film earned the weakestreviews of the live-action Star Wars films, it is still a Star Wars film. More..

It’s another bad week on the home market. There’s not much in the way of big releases and only a couple of releases were Pick of the Week contenders. Destry Rides Again: The Criterion Collection and Police Squad: The Complete Series were the only two releases that I was considering and the latter won out in the end. More..

Trolls: World Tour got off to a start that is sure to make movie studios happy, even if it will make theater owners very nervous. The film is playing in some drive-in theaters, which can remain open during the Covid-19 outbreak, but it is the film’s digital delivery numbers that are exciting, as Universal touted the film’s digital opening was approximately ten times the previous record for the studio. Granted, we knew the film would be a hit compared to other digital releases, because this is the first time a major theatrical release basically skipped theaters, but this still topped expectations, according to the studio.

This may be enough for studios to begin work to release more films direct-to-digital, at least while theaters are closed. It might even be enough for some studios to experiment with direct-to-digital releases with theatrical-level budgets even after Covid-19 subsides and theaters start to open again. I don’t know what this means for the future of the theatrical box office, but it is interesting, to put it mildly.

Universal comments, “We will wait for a clearer picture of results that will emerge in the coming weeks before sharing additional statistics.”More..

I got a screener this week. I didn’t think that would happen until the Covid-19 outbreak at least calmed down and since last week the Canadian government said restrictions could last until the end of June, I thought that would be a long wait. However, not only did I get a screener just before the weekend, it is for the Blu-ray release for Police Squad: The Complete Series. I already own the show on DVD, but is it worth getting on Blu-ray?More..

As usual, Netflix dominates the list of streaming service debuts this week. A new episode is being released for The Tiger King, which will almost certainly be the most-watched show this weekend. Another tiger-related release from Netflix, Tigertail, is the best-reviewed new release. They aren’t the only new releases worth checking out though. A Celebration of the Music from Coco should please fans of the movie, while Hi Score Girl: Season Two can finally be binged on Netflix.More..

April 9, 2020

This could turn out to be the most important weekend for the movie industry in decades. It’s the weekend Trolls: World Tour comes out on the home market. This is the first major motion picture with a planned saturation level release that is not being pushed back due to the Covid-19 outbreak, but is instead coming out on Video on Demand. In a few years, we might look back at this week as the week the movie industry changed fundamentally, if this film is a big enough hit to convince studios that theatrical releases are unnecessary. The movie industry is still reacting to the ongoing Covid-19 outbreak and the changing release schedule has resulted in not a lot coming out this week. Even worse, there are only three first-run releases on the main list and two of them are serious bombs. Fortunately, the third first-run release, Little Women, is an easy Pick of the Week winner. In fact, it’s only competition is the Slings & Arrows: Complete Series DVD, a Canadian TV show that most people reading this have never even heard of. More..

This week’s list of streaming debuts is dominated by Netflix TV shows. That said, I think the two DinseyNature documentaries, Dolphin Reef and Elephant, should attract some attention. While I’m interested in both Home Before Dark and Tales From the Loop, neither of which is a Netflix release. More..
